Language Teachings and Development

The Center for Italian Studies
www.centerforitalianstudies.com

The Center for Italian Studies in Tallahassee has as its mission the promotion, diffusion and teaching of Italian language, culture, heritage, and history. It aims to provide a resource to help local university students of Italian through the organization and creation of practical activities and cultural events.

One of our goals is to build skills for immediate communication helping students to develop strong Italian language foundations.

With this in mind we have organized an annual full immersion study program at The University of Salento (formerly the University of Lecce), in Lecce, Italy. Students in this area have had excellent results with this program in recent years. A number of Lecce student participants have been awarded Winthrop-King FSU Scholarships, as well as Salento scholarships. A number of other Lecce students have been granted graduate assistantships in Italian Studies ($10,000 + 80-85% tuition free.)

We also facilitate long weekends and workshops at Concordia College, in Lago del Bosco, Minnesota, offering summer Italian immersion camps for students, families and adults: www.concordialanguagevillages.org/newsite

Dr. William E. Leparulo, Professor of Italian Cinema and Literature at Florida State University, directs the Center for Italian Studies. For more information on Professor Leparulo consult: www.fsu.edu/~modlang/

A few words about our Lecce program….

We created this program because many students are unenthusiastic about the prospect of seeing a foreign country from the windows of a tour bus, staying at impersonal hotels, eating in restaurants that cater to tourists, and having little to no interaction with local people.

At the program sponsored by the University of Salento you will speak the language freely and easily every minute of the day, you will learn by doing and you will meet students and new friends from around the world that you will never forget.  Instead of a mere study program we offer students the opportunity to create a life-changing cultural adventure.  The Lecce Italian language course consists of 20 class hours per week with small classes supported by academic excursions. It is divided into three levels of language knowledge, all three with conversation, readings, grammar and phonetic drill exercises and language lab activities.
Learn more about the additional cultural enrichment treat that awaits each enrolled student---a selection of one or  more extracurricular art or craft classes taught by local artisans in Lecce.
